April 21 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm£8 – £10
Talk Title: Real lives of Roman Britain/Elusive Celts
Anyone who watched the Time Team series on Channel 4 with Tony Robinson will have seen Guy in a number of episodes. It will be a first time for the Friends that we have had him to give us a talk and we are certainly looking forward to his visit. He is a charismatic, passionate and engaging speaker and we are sure that he will not disappoint. His specialised subject is Roman History and I for one only have a limited knowledge of the subject and am looking forward to Guy enlightening me and our audience on the Roman occupation of Britain. Wincobank fort was close by and reference will be made to that.
Real lives of Roman Britain/Elusive Celts: the evidence for real individuals in the art and archaeology of Roman Britain
Roman Britain was a remarkable period in British history. This is the time of the first recorded individuals from soldiers to slaves. Tombstones bring us the first recognisable faces and their inscriptions the first personal details of ordinary people. The story starts with a centurion whose tombstone was found at Colchester. His is the first carved realistic portrait in British history. We can trace the history of the province through these remarkable monuments while at the same time realising that it is only through the mechanisms of classical culture that we are in a position to access the period. Why is that? The answer lies in the fact that we are ourselves members of a classicised society, educated from birth to have certain expectations about the way art and language represents.
